Living with an 85 year old

What I'm coming to learn in living with my 85 year old Grandmother is she doesn't know how to do old. I'm wondering if anyone really knows how to do old. Your body starts to deteriorate, but your mind stays the same telling you you can still do the things you've always done. Life for her has gone from daily trips to the "Spa" (bobbing around in a pool with old ladies) and Home Town Buffet to being the survivor of her siblings and friends. She still cares about the small things, the dust, the dirt, having a green lawn, but it's also too much for her. Yesterday Morning I came down to breakfast (to my daily banana) and she was painting her pink cane with her 20 year old pink nail polish. (The comment that the store it came from hasn't been around for 20 years tipped me off.) What makes one care at 85  whether or not there are chips on your pink cane? I've realized that she doesn't know how to do old. The small stuff still matters. She'll continue to dye her hair, and match all her jewelry to her matching outfit everyday. I'm glad for that. I hope that I don't know how to do old either when I'm 85.
